Pear and rosemary are a classic combination that bring out the best in each other. Subtly sweet, fruity pear plays off the piney woodsy scent of rosemary to make hosting moments that feel refreshingly classic and Fall. Here, I’m exploring adding them in to your next cocktail or dinner party menu to make seasonal hosting a breeze.

As the days are getting shorter, Fall flavors announce themselves on full blast. In my kitchen, I’m always inspired in the Fall to bring out the pumpkin, butternut squash, apples, and sage. I love seasonal cooking as it’s a way to highlight the produce that is the freshest at the moment. But it’s also a way to create memories as there are certain dishes I only make at certain times and find myself looking forward to them all year.
One flavor pairing that I particularly love in the Fall is subtle sweet pear and bold, woodsy rosemary. This is an extrovert/introvert combination as one brings soft, crisp sweetness while the other brings a more vibrant and savory pine and herb flavor. Together, they play off each other in the most exciting of ways, helping balance out the earthiness of each.
My Perfect Pairings series offers flavor combinations that you can use to create your own menus for entertaining at home. Look for this combo as you are planning a Fall meal. Or, use my cocktail and appetizer combination as a way to launch your favorite Fall hosting moment. A coordinated cocktail and appetizer can be paired with any Fall main course you like to make and serve; the rosemary and pear in the two elements to start make the whole meal feel more intentional and coordinated.
Why Pear and Rosemary Work Together
Pear and rosemary work really well together because they bring that classic savory and sweet combination. Pear is a subtle fruit that has a lovely, soft sweetness to it. It’s naturally mild with a crisp refreshing flavor that’s perfect for Fall. Rosemary, on the other hand, is much bolder in its savory, piney notes. This is the flavor of Thanksgiving to me as it’s always reminiscent of holiday meals gone by. Rosemary can be quite a strong flavor, so it needs something softer and sweeter to balance it out. Pear brings out the more elegant, floral notes of the herb. Pear, on the other side, needs a strong flavor like rosemary to really enhance all of those sweeter notes.
These two flavors are also perfect for Fall. They have a comforting coziness that’s just right for the season. These are earthy flavors that will be gorgeous in cocktails, roasts, and baked desserts now and into the winter ahead.

This Week’s Pairing
Rosemary and pear feature prominently in this week’s pairing. I’m bringing this flavor combination to a sophisticated cocktail and a charcuterie board-approved appetizer to highlight the ways these flavors play off of one another.
Pear and Rosemary Mezcal Margarita

The first time I made this cocktail, I knew on the first sip it would become my Fall signature cocktail. It so gorgeously Fall through and through. That green gold color? Like beautiful Fall leaves. On the first sip, the intense smoky mezcal makes me think of evenings by the fire pit. But underneath is that combo of sweet fruity pear and woodsy rosemary that really stand up to the smoke from the mezcal. That combo works so well in this cocktail and signals cooler nights ahead.

Rosemary Roasted Pear with Whipped Goat Cheese, Prosciutto, and Pistachio

Roasting pears deepens their sweetness, so it’s a natural combination with a sprinkle of rosemary. Here I serve it with another boldly tart flavor, whipped goat cheese. Then a scatter of crispy prosciutto and pistachio for a bit of crunch. This is the kind of appetizer that comes together quickly once you’ve roasted the pears and can be out with your guests in minutes.

How to Add Rosemary and Pear to Your Fall Menus
Pear and rosemary is a versatile flavor combo that can be added to all sorts of Fall hosting moments. Here are a few examples of how to add in the cocktail and appetizer:
- For a cocktail party: Make the margarita the signature cocktail, and stir up a pitcher. Set it out with sliced pears, rosemary sprigs, and rosemary salt to garnish. Offer the whipped goat cheese appetizer and a few other apps of your choosing. Here I offer some cheese pairings with the margaritas if you want to keep things simple.
- A fireside gathering: hand guests a margarita and a blanket and let them grab a place by the fire. Try the appetizer and maybe some easy sweets by the fire.
- For an intimate dinner party: Have the margaritas and appetizer waiting as guests arrive. Then make your favorite dinner and dessert. The coordinated cocktails and appetizer give the evening a curated feel.
- For a Fall picnic or apple picking: pack up the premade margaritas and the appetizer on a picnic-friendly serving plate. Add in some sandwiches and you have a gorgeous Fall picnic.
- For brunch: this cocktail and appetizer is very brunch friendly. Serve them alongside muffins and an egg back for an elegant brunch party.

Try it With These Menus
This cocktail and appetizer combination would be beautiful add-ons to so many of my seasonal menus. Try it with these:
- A Backyard Pizza Menu: This menu offers three pizzas to serve together in the backyard. Add in the cocktail and appetizer to round out the evening.
- A Simple Romantic Picnic: Replace the couscous salad with the appetizer and you have a gorgeous meal on the go.
- Last Minute Brunch: This is an easy cocktail and appetizer add in with the migas, macerated fruit, and my favorite almond brunch cake on that menu. That would be a truly stunning brunch spread.
- Romantic Farmers Market Dinner: Add in the appetizer here for sure. Then it’s your choice if you want to sub in the margarita for the market gimlet. The pear rosemary mezcal margarita will make that whole menu feel more Fall, but the market gimlet is very refreshing with cucumber and lime notes.
