A Summer Backyard Pizza Party Menu for Everyday Romance

An elegant pizza party is a classic casual event you can host in your backyard with these ideas to give it a unique, chic spin. Pizza naturally tells guests to kick back and grab a slice while these pizzas featuring shrimp and pesto, sliced potato, and a strawberry churro style for dessert bring a sense of fun and style to your event.

As we head into summer, my mind always turns to hosting and inviting friends over for warm weather gatherings. Pool parties, summer movie nights, or even a casual dinner in the backyard all become the perfect excuse to gather people around the table.

But I’m always searching for the sweet spot between elegant, whimsical, and completely laid-back. I want guests to feel like they’ve been invited to something special without feeling any pressure or formality. Come as you are, grab a drink, and let me take care of the rest.

Nothing captures that feeling more easily than a romantic pizza party.

Pizza is a host’s dream meal. It comes together quickly, everyone shares it, and it naturally encourages people to relax. There’s something about setting pizzas out on the table that immediately makes guests settle in and stay awhile. So for summer hosting, I wanted to create a slightly elevated version of the classic pizza night.

Now, this menu may not look exactly like what comes to mind when you hear “pizza party.” There’s no tomato sauce or pepperoni in sight. Instead, I’m leaning into seasonal ingredients to create pizzas that feel fresh, unexpected, and a little romantic while still staying wonderfully unfussy.

For the savory centerpiece, I’m serving my Citrus Pistachio Pesto Pizza topped with shrimp, fennel, and basil. The citrus brightens the seafood beautifully, while the pistachios add richness and a little crunch that makes the whole pizza feel extra special.

I’m also making a Potato, Leek, and Gruyère Pizza finished with a lemon crème fraîche drizzle. It reminds me so much of a potato gratin in the best possible way — thin layers of potato, melty cheese, and creamy leeks baked until golden and crisp around the edges. The lemon crème fraîche keeps it feeling light enough for summer.

And for dessert, I’m leaning fully into the playful side of the evening with a Strawberry Churro Pizza. Made with puff pastry, cinnamon sugar, and fresh strawberries, it combines two nostalgic favorites into one incredibly easy dessert.

To round everything out, all you need is a big green salad and a signature cocktail. My Strawberry Basil Garden Spritz pairs especially well here, tying together the basil from the pesto pizza and the strawberries in the dessert.

Serve everything family style–let guests grab a slice and settle in for a relaxed summer evening together.

The Menu

This menu is designed to keep things casual but elegant with unique flavors. I’m serving:

Grilled Citrus Pistachio Pesto Pizza with Shrimp and Fennel

This pizza is my nod to summertime on a plate. Made on the grill, this pizza brings summer coastal vibes with its combination of citrus and seafood. The secret ingredient here is a layer of my citrus pistachio pesto which works as the sauce. Layer on top grilled fennel, ricotta, mozzarella, and the shrimp for a pizza that’s unexpected but distinctly summer.

Simple Potato, Leek, and Gruyere Pizza with Lemon Creme Fraiche

Inspired by potato gratin, this pizza takes its simple luxury from that favorite of Thanksgiving sides. Pizza dough topped with leeks, thinly sliced potatoes, and a layer of gruyere that’s cheesy and indulgent. A sprinkle of rosemary brings an herbal note that’s incredibly fresh. Top it all off with a drizzle of lemon creme fraiche for a pizza that’s equal parts indulgent, luxurious, and incredibly simple.

Strawberry Churro Pizza

This Strawberry Churro Pizza is my little nostalgic showstopper of a dessert. This is what happens when a churro makes eyes at a pizza–a heavenly combination. I use puff pastry to keep this extra simple, then brush the sides in butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. It tastes exactly like a churro. The filling is macerated strawberries that are topped with a dollop of cinnamon mascarpone. This is the kind of dessert that inspires conversation. It’s the perfect ender for a romantic pizza party.

Hosting Timeline

Pizza may have a welcoming laid back vibe, but the only challenge to the host is that it’s best served fresh and hot out of the oven. For most of my dinner parties, I like to do as much in advance as possible. I don’t want to be running around the kitchen when guests are arriving–I want to be enjoying the party with them!

To prepare for serving the pizza hot, here is a timeline I like to use for this party. I would also say not to stress about having all of the food ready at the same time. As the pizzas are cooked, serve them. Guests love grabbing a slice and enjoying conversation. Don’t feel that they need to be presented with all of the options at the same time.

Here is the cooking timeline I use for this party:

  • Make in advance what you can. That means making the dressing for the salad and the base for the cocktails the morning of the party. You can also make the pesto for the shrimp pizza and the lemon creme fraiche for the potato pizza that morning. Also wash the berries for the churro pizza in advance and whip the cinnamon mascarpone.
  • 2 hours before the party, take the puff pastry out of the freezer to come to room temp. If it gets too warm move it to the fridge until you’re ready to use (it’s easier to work with cold).
  • 1 hour before the party, take the salad dressing, creme fraiche, pesto, and cinnamon mascarpone out of the fridge so they come to room temp before you’re ready to use.
  • Before guests arrive make the strawberry churro pizza. This can be served room temp, so have that one ready to go.
  • Also before guests arrive, slice the potatoes and roll out the pizza dough for the two pizzas. Assemble the potato pizza, but do not bake yet.
  • Last minute before guests arrive, set out the strawberry churro pizza, the base for the strawberry basil garden spritzs, a bottle of prosecco to top them, and toss the salad.
  • Once your guests have arrived and you’re ready, bake the potato pizza and top with the lemon creme fraiche.
  • Then take the pizza dough and ingredients for the shrimp pizza out to the grill and make that pizza out there. Because the pesto is already made, it makes it easy just to assemble this one on the grill.
  • Serve! All of these pizzas come together really quickly, so even though there is some cooking during the party, keep the vibe laid back.

A Truly Unique Evening at Home

The beauty of a menu like this is being able to mix and match the pizzas to suit your liking. I focused here on pizzas that would be perfect for a summer event, bringing in coastal and nostalgic flavors. But feel free to mix and match to create your perfect romantic pizza party menu. In the springtime, I like to add in my Asparagus, Fontina, and Thyme Flatbread which embraces the beautiful green colors of spring. In the Fall, I go for my Brussels Sprout, Pancetta, and Goat Cheese Pizza–a truly memorable combo. And in the winter I like to sub in something heartier and add my Smoked Gouda and Caramelized Onion Pull Apart Bread to the mix. That one mixes pizza dough, caramelized onions, and gouda together and is a true crowd pleaser.

Embrace the laid back nature of pizza with any of these ideas but keep a beautiful sense of style for a truly memorable menu.
