The most beautiful jewel-toned cocktail, my Hibiscus-Spiced Margaritas keep date night playful. Floral and a bit sweet, these margaritas get an unexpected kick from a pinch of cinnamon in the drink and on the rim.

The classic margarita—especially in Southern California—is absolutely ubiquitous. Everyone has their own version. I tend to prefer mine with plenty of lime and not too much sweetness, something crisp and refreshing rather than overly sugary.
But for my elegant taco night, I wanted a margarita that still honored those classic elements while offering something a little more unique—something unexpected.
These Hibiscus-Spiced Margaritas are exactly that. Their vibrant pink-purple hue immediately sets the tone, evoking warm, tropical evenings and the striking color of hibiscus flowers. The flavor stays true to the margarita you know, with fresh lime and orange liqueur, but the hibiscus adds a subtle floral note that keeps the drink balanced and not overly sweet.
To finish, I like to add a pinch of cinnamon—both in the cocktail itself and in the salt rim. It’s a small detail, but it brings a gentle warmth that feels just a bit surprising and makes the whole drink feel more special.
I created these as the signature cocktail for my Elegant Shrimp Taco Date Night menu, where I wanted each element to feel vibrant and slightly unexpected. The tacos take a classic street food and refine it—smoky chipotle shrimp, a simple creamy citrus slaw, and roasted spiced sweet potatoes on the side—while dessert leans into those same tropical notes with coconut lime tarts.
Every date night deserves a signature cocktail, and these hibiscus-spiced margaritas set the tone beautifully—bright, a little playful, and perfectly suited to a romantic night at home.

Hibiscus-Spiced Margaritas
Ingredients
Method
- For the Hibiscus Syrup: Combine water and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer while stirring to dissolve the sugar. Turn off the heat and add the hibiscus flowers. Let steep for 15-30 minutes. Remove the hibiscus flowers and add a squeeze of lime. The syrup can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.
- Make the hibiscus salt by mixing together crushed hibiscus flowers, coarse salt, and a pinch of cinnamon on a plate. Run a lime around the edge of your glass and place the rim on top of the salt mixture. Fill the glass with ice.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the tequila, lime juice, hibiscus syrup, orange liqueur, and a pinch of cinnamon. Shake until combined and chilled. Strain into the glass and serve immediately.

Hosting Notes
- If you like the cinnamon notes here, you could lean further into it by adding a cinnamon stick with the hibiscus flowers when you’re steeping the hibiscus syrup.
- I like a squeeze of lime in the hibiscus syrup. But orange or lemon would be nice too.
- If you’re planning to serve a few of these, batch them and serve in a pitcher. A pitcher of margaritas always says instant fun.
- Try a float of Grand Marnier on top of the margarita for a Cadillac style.

These margaritas are really lovely for spring because of the beautiful color and slightly floral taste.
