Tacos may not be the most obvious choice for an elegant dinner. But for this Elegant Shrimp Taco Dinner Menu for Two I’m giving them a sophisticated spin with spicy shrimp, citrus slaw, and roasted sweet potatoes. Add in a bright hibiscus margarita and coconut lime tarts for dessert and this will be a flirty and playful date night dinner at home.

When I think about a romantic date night dinner at home—or even an intimate dinner party—tacos aren’t usually my first thought. They’re casual, a little messy, and often associated with easy family meals or laid-back gatherings.
But that’s also exactly what makes them so appealing.
Tacos immediately signal a sense of relaxed comfort. In this Modern Romantic Elegant Shrimp Taco Dinner, they’re refined without losing that sense of fun. They set the tone for a date night that feels playful yet thoughtful, flirty, but still sophisticated.
Each element of this menu takes something familiar and gives it a fresh, slightly unexpected twist. A hibiscus-spiced margarita starts the evening with its vibrant color and subtle floral notes, finished with just a hint of warm cinnamon spice. It’s striking, balanced, and instantly sets the mood.
The tacos themselves feature shrimp, which brings a naturally more refined feel. Cooked in a smoky, lightly spiced tomato sauce and paired with a simple, creamy citrus slaw, they’re composed and flavorful without feeling heavy. Rather than piling on toppings, the focus stays on balance—each taco feels composed and complete on its own.
On the side, roasted sweet potatoes add warmth and depth, rounding out the meal with a subtle sweetness that complements the spice.
For dessert, I wanted something that echoed the creamy richness of a traditional flan, but in a simpler, more approachable form. These Mini Coconut-Lime Tarts bring that same silky texture, with bright lime and a hint of coconut tying the entire menu together in a fresh, slightly tropical way.
A date night at home should feel relaxed—unhurried, a little indulgent, and easy to enjoy. This menu leans into that feeling, taking something as familiar as tacos and turning it into a dinner that feels both special and effortless.

The Menu
- Drink: Hibiscus-Spiced Margaritas
- Dinner: Crispy Chipotle Shrimp Tacos with Creamy Lime Slaw and Chipotle Roasted Sweet Potatoes
- Dessert: Mini Coconut-Lime Tarts
Hibiscus-Spiced Margaritas

Hibiscus-Spiced Margaritas set a playful, flirty tone for date night. Their jewel-toned hue evokes warm, tropical evenings, while the flavor builds on the best parts of a classic margarita with a subtle floral twist.
A hint of cinnamon—both in the drink and along the salt rim—adds a gentle warmth to each sip.
They’re elevated yet playful, and the perfect way to begin the evening.

Crispy Chipotle Shrimp Tacos with Creamy Lime Slaw

A refined, thoughtful taco is the anchor of this menu. Smoky, spiced shrimp form the heart of each one, while a creamy lime slaw brings in the familiar flavors of classic toppings in a more streamlined way.
Together, the tacos are vibrant and balanced, with just the right mix of warmth, brightness, and richness.
On the side, roasted sweet potatoes add depth and a subtle sweetness. Served in place of chips, they make the meal feel just a bit more composed—while still delivering all the comfort you want.

Mini Coconut-Lime Tarts

That same playful, slightly tropical note carries through to dessert with these Mini Coconut-Lime Tarts. Individual desserts are so inviting—they always feel a little more thoughtful and just a bit more special.
Made with coconut milk, eggs, and fresh lime, the filling is simple yet incredibly creamy once baked. After chilling, each tart is finished with a touch of lime zest or a sprinkle of toasted coconut for an elegant final detail.
Light, fresh, and gently citrusy, they’re the perfect way to end the evening.

How to Host an Elegant Shrimp Taco Date Night
This menu is designed for the cook to be able to enjoy date night with minimal stress and maximum joy. It keeps things simple so that you, the host, can spend time with a loved one and still have an impressive meal.
I designed this menu with a relaxed, playful sense of fun in mind. Let the table decor be relaxed as well. A table runner in a bright color brings that sense of fun while keeping other decorations minimal. The meal relies on lime throughout, so I think a glass or bowl full of lime is a beautiful enhancement to the table. A few small candles provide soft lighting without going over the top. This is not the time for the huge bouquet on the table–keep it relaxed and fun.
If you would like to give the Mexican restaurant vibes, you could always serve the hibiscus margaritas in a pitcher on the table. Add a bowl of chips and guacamole for starters if you’d like to keep it more casual.
I like to serve this meal in stages rather than all at once. Start with the margaritas for a short cocktail hour, then move on to the shrimp tacos and roasted potatoes. The tacos come together quickly, so they can be assembled right before serving. The roasted sweet potatoes would be fine to be served at room temperature. Since dessert can be made in advance, it will be ready when you are.
In keeping with the idea of an elegant taco night, I do like to serve the tacos already assembled. This is not a taco bar kind of night, which is very fun but more informal. Instead, I like to serve fully composed platters of tacos and sweet potatoes in a serving bowl.
The fun of this date night menu is being able to enjoy it in a relaxed setting at home. So keep it elegant but unhurried for a special night.
