Skip the Takeout: A Romantic Double Date Night Menu

Hosting a few friends for an intimate dinner party can be a wonderful, low stress way to reconnect and build memories. Keep the menu thoughtful but laid back with my Double Date Night Dinner Party Menu. Here, everyone makes their own Hoisin Glazed Salmon Bowls while enjoying a sophisticated cocktail and an inviting warm appetizer. This is a wonderful menu for relaxed hosting.

Skip the Takeout Double Date Night Menu

While hosting a big dinner party at your home can be a fun thing to plan for, there’s something extra special about an intimate dinner. It can be a bit more impromptu, a bit cozier. You can skip the formality of things and just keep the evening laid-back.

A small dinner party is also an excellent opportunity to plan the evening around an activity. Invite friends over to play cards or try out mahjong. Maybe you’re feeling a little craftier and want to paint pottery or carve pumpkins together. When there’s something fun to do, a few cocktails on the table, and plenty of time to talk, the evening has a way of unfolding all on its own.

For this kind of gathering, I love a menu that’s full of flavor but still matches the casual mood. Greet your guests with a Maple Ginger Bourbon Sour and give everyone a chance to settle in. It’s a twist on the classic bourbon sour, with spicy fresh ginger and warm maple adding a little something special. It’s sophisticated enough to feel like a proper cocktail, but simple enough that the host isn’t stuck behind the bar.

When it’s time for a bite, bring out the Warm Chicken Peanut Satay Dip. Serve it straight from the oven while it’s still warm, with plenty of naan for dipping. It’s a playful spin on chicken peanut satay, transformed into a creamy, scoopable dip that’s made for sharing. The golden top makes it feel a little special, but the whole thing is wonderfully relaxed.

Then comes the main event: Hoisin Glazed Salmon and Roasted Carrot Bowls. I love serving this one right in the middle of the table, surrounded by bowls of jasmine rice, edamame, scallions, cucumber, and the lime-finished hoisin sauce. Everyone can build their own bowl, choosing exactly what they want. It’s casual and playful, but still feels thoughtful—the kind of dinner that encourages everyone to hang out at the table and keep talking.

I don’t fuss with dessert for a meal like this. A little mango sorbet is all you need for a cool, refreshing ending.

For the table, I’m leaning into rich reds and little glints of gold. A runner with those colors, white plates, gold chargers, and plenty of candlelight would create a warm, romantic glow. I’d keep the flowers simple and stay within the same color family—maybe an arrangement of all yellow or orange blooms. And I love using an assortment of little bowls for all of the toppings. They’re practical for the host, but spread across the table, they also become part of the decor.

For the music, a Bossa nova playlist feels just right. It’s classy without being too serious and upbeat enough to keep the energy going, whether you’re playing cards, chatting over cocktails, or sitting down to dinner.

Small dinner parties can be just as memorable, special, and romantic as large ones. In fact, sometimes the most memorable evenings are the ones that don’t feel overly planned at all. A few friends, good food, beautiful drinks, candlelight, and something fun to do together can be more than enough to turn an ordinary evening at home into something worth remembering.

The Menu

For this Double Date Night, I’m serving:

Ginger Maple Bourbon Sours

My Ginger Maple Bourbon Sour is the perfect cocktail for the host to shake up in the kitchen as guests arrive and settle in. This is a layered and sophisticated cocktail as it tastes of spicy ginger, warm maple, lemon, and rich bourbon. It’s the kind of cocktail that feels really classy and thoughtful to guests but just takes minutes to shake up. A perfect way to kick off the evening.

Warm Chicken Peanut Satay Dip

Rather than starting the meal with a salad, I love to invite guests to grab a spoonful of my Warm Chicken Peanut Satay Dip on a slice of naan. This is pure comfort food, though ricotta keeps this dip airy. I’m mixing all the flavors of Chicken Peanut Satay, but making it a bit more unexpected baked up in a stunning pie plate. This is a starter that’s both eye catching and a joy to share over cocktails and conversation.

Hoisin Glazed Salmon and Roasted Carrot Bowls

A create your own bowl meal is the ultimate in casual hosting. And my Hoisin Glazed Salmon and Roasted Carrot Bowls are gorgeous and packed with flavor. The key to this recipe is a hoisin sauce that I use both to glaze the salmon and carrots before roasting and also pump up with lime for a finishing sauce. Fill little bowls with jasmine rice, edamame, scallions, peanuts, chili sauce, and anything else your heart desires and set them up on the serving table. Then serve each guest a fillet of salmon and let them make up their own. A dash of sesame seed finishes it off. This is a meal that brings out your guests personalities and is extra laid back for the host. Absolutely no stress with this one.

Hosting Notes and Timeline

  • This dinner is intended to be a casual affair, so skip the formalities of a dinner party with this one. Let people gather with their meals around the activity you have planned or even at the breakfast table. Keep guests hanging out with you in the kitchen while you shake up cocktails–no need to have them set out ready to go. Embrace the laid back with this one.
  • To keep things casual, feel free to prep some of the meal in advance. This is the kind of meal that can be made and served in the same evening. But if you’d like to get ahead of it, here’s what I would do:
    • The Morning of:
      • Batch the cocktails–I would mix up everything except the ginger and ice. Then when it’s time to serve, shake up the drinks with ginger and ice in the cocktail shaker and serve.
      • Make the Chicken Peanut Satay Dip in advance. Store it in the fridge, then bring to room temperature before the party. When guests begin to arrive, pop it in the oven for 20 minutes to bake. Serve warm.
      • Prep the naan or any other dippers you’d like to serve with the satay dip in advance.
      • For the salmon bowls, make the hoisin glaze and finishing sauce that morning.
      • Prep all of the things you’d like to top the bowls with, like slicing cucumber, etc. Make rice.
    • Just Before Guests Arrive:
      • Roast the carrots for the first part of their time in the oven.
      • Set out the naan and the toppings for the salmon bowls.
    • When Guests Arrive
      • Take the carrots out of the oven and pop in the Chicken Peanut Satay Dip.
      • Shake up the cocktails and serve.
      • Add the salmon slices to the baking sheet with the carrots. Glaze both.
      • When the dip is done, slide the carrots and salmon back into the oven.
      • Roast the salmon and carrots. Warm the rice. Transfer to serving dishes and enjoy!
  • If you’re having an activity with the dinner party, feel free to serve cocktails when guests arrive then start in on the activity. I’d still start the carrots just before guests arrive in this case. Then the only thing that’s left to do is bake the dip and roast the glazed carrots and salmon. Serve the dip while everyone is doing their activity together, then take a break to enjoy the salmon bowls together.

It features a silky green pasta and asparagus flatbread–delicious any time of year. Or my Early Spring Dinner Party Menu would be perfect if you like the salmon in this menu. That salmon is roasted with a mustard glaze that is so yum.
