The Market Gimlet–Cucumber Basil Gin Cocktail

Refreshing, relaxing, and invigorating, my Market Gimlet is the perfect cocktail for kicking back on a warm summer day. Layered with the flavors of cucumber, basil, and lime, this is a memorable drink that invokes a relaxing afternoon in the garden.

Cucumber has always felt synonymous with relaxation to me. It’s spa water, cool slices over tired eyes, that clean, refreshing scent that instantly signals it’s time to slow down. It’s one of the most refreshing flavors there is, which makes it a natural choice for a welcome cocktail—something that smiles and says, kick back and enjoy.

This Market Gimlet starts with cucumber and layers in fresh basil for a light, herbal twist. Together, they create a cocktail that feels both sophisticated and effortless—perfect alongside the fresh, seasonal flavors of a farmers market menu. I designed it as the kickoff to my Romantic Farmers Market Dinner Menu, and it sets the scene of relaxed sophistication and produce-forward recipes perfectly.

Built on gin with bright lime and just a touch of simple syrup, it’s crisp, balanced, and gently aromatic. The cucumber and basil come through in a way that feels clean and refreshing, making it an easy, elegant way to begin an evening.

Hosting Notes

  • The Market Gimlet can be made in advance. Make the drinks up to the point of adding soda water. Strain them in to a small pitcher and keep it in the fridge until dinner time. Then pour into glasses and add the soda water.
  • I garnished this drink with a small wheel of cucumber on the side for a classic look. But a basil leaf or a cucumber ribbon would be equally pretty.
  • I would make these as close to the time you’d like to serve it as you can. The cucumber can become a bit bitter the longer it sits, so to me this is better fresher.
  • I can’t get over that gorgeous green color! Consider its beauty when picking a serving glass to highlight it. Here, I set the drinks near the sunflowers to bring out the color of the drinks and the flowers.

A Refreshing Start to Spring

Cucumber is incredibly refreshing, and it’s a wonderful way to kick off my Romantic Farmers Market Dinner Menu. I have other delicious drinks on the site that you could add to this menu as well. My gorgeously pink hibiscus-spiced margaritas come to mind for their vibrant pink color. Or try my refreshing strawberry basil garden spritz for a drink that also uses basil and is equally fresh and invigorating. For a more lemon-forward approach, try my Chamomile Bee’s Knees, which combines the flavor of lemon and a tea infused simple syrup for a gorgeous drink for spring of summer. These cocktails are sure to make your guests feel welcome and cared for.
