Here’s all the romance news you missed this past week!
Count me all in on Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation of WUTHERING HEIGHTS, which she announced will star Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN was one of my favorite movies of the last five years, and I can’t wait to see the kind of vision and feminine cool Emerald will bring to one of my favorite classic forbidden love stories. The casting was not without its controversy, though. The question of casting Elordi for a role that is originally understood to not be white notwithstanding, the rest I’m willing to give Fennell the benefit of the doubt and wait to see what she delivers.
With the popularity of THE PERFECT COUPLE on Netflix, the creative team behind the show including Showrunner Jenna Lamia and EP/star Nicole Kidman are looking for other Elin Hilderbrand novels to adapt. Elin suggests THE CASTAWAYS and her PARADISE series. They’re honestly all good—I’ll vote for 28 SUMMERS and HERE’S TO US.
Michelle Pfeiffer has been cast to play Elle Fanning’s mother in the tv adaptation of MARGO’S GOT MONEY TROUBLES. Loved this book, and this character is an ex-Hooters waitress, so should be fun.
From the theater world, the comedy ALL IN: COMEDY ABOUT LOVE has announced a second cast to join the play on January 14th that includes Lin Manuel Miranda, Aidy Bryant, Jimmy Fallon, and Andrew Rannells. The original cast begins December 11th and includes John Mulaney, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Chloe Fineman, and Fred Armisen. This is described as a series of stories “about dating, heartbreak, marriage and that sort of thing” from Simon Rich—sounds amazing.
Sally Rooney in an interview discussed that she is not taking offers for screen adaptation on her third novel, INTERMEZZO. I like the idea of an author taking this kind of ownership of her work—not every piece was made for screen adaptation and there has to be real vision on how to reinvent the material.
