Max Cozy: 5 Small Town Romance Novels for Fall and a cozy recipe pairing!

Cozy season is one my favorite times of year–it practically begs for a warm blanket and a swoon worthy romance novel! Today I’m sharing the way to achieve the highest heights of maximum cozy with 5 Small Town Romance Novels for Fall and a cozy recipe pairing!

There’s nothing better in Fall than achieving the heights of cozy with your favorite sweater, a comfy chair, a warm latte, something sweet to nibble on, and an addictive book. Even better if that book contains meet cutes, a cinnamon roll (the book boyfriend kind, natch), and an HEA!

Here in Southern California, the weather doesn’t always cooperate for Fall. A day in the 70s will absolutely suffice, though probably not to wear your warmest sweater. But there’s something about bringing all those elements together that just feels like autumn to me, even if it’s still 90º outside.

The small town romance is one of my all time favorite tropes–it’s so cozy and the wish fulfillment of it is through the roof–things move slower and everyone knows everyone else’s business, in a good way. As I’m rewatching Gilmore Girls this Fall, I’m thinking about my favorite small towns in books. Rome, Kentucky springs to mind. Meadowlark, Wyoming does as well. I decided to gather all my favorite small town romances so you’ll have the perfect book to add to your chair/sweater/latte/snack equation.

Oh, and while I can’t provide the chair or the sweater, I can definitely help with the sweets! Keep scrolling for a recipe idea and some other great Fall bakes from my blog!

5 Small Town Romances to Make You Swoon in a Sweater

1. Done and Dusted

Done and Dusted by Lyla Sage
Small Town: Meadowlark, Wyoming
Small town vibes meets cowboy romance in Lyla Sage's REBEL BLUE RANCH series. The first of these novels, DONE AND DUSTED, follows Emmy Ryder, who returns to Meadowlark and the Ryder family after a few years away. A champion horse back rider, everyone is surprised to see Emmy struggling to get back in the saddle after an accident. Enter Emmy's older brother's best friend and the local bar owner and horseback riding instructor, Luke Brooks. The sparks fly between these two, but it's the relaxed western setting and small town feels that make this a perfect Fall read.

2. When in Rome

When in Rome by Sarah Adams
Small Town: Rome, Kentucky
WHEN IN ROME is the first of Sarah Adams Rome, Kentucky series which centers on the Walker siblings, their romantic entanglements, and the 3 sisters love of Audrey Hepburn movies. WHEN IN ROME kicks off the four book series when pop star Amelia Rose (known to her legion of fans as Rae Rose), sneaks away from her pop star life only to have her car break down in the lawn of pie shop owner Noah Walker in Rome, Kentucky. Though Noah has no interest in celebrity life, he agrees to let Amelia stay with him until her car is fixed. Amelia warms up to the town of Rome and finds the life she's been missing as an isolated pop star--and the man she can't get out of her head in Noah. These books are so sweet, not overly spicy, and they all feature romances that will make you fall in love with the central couple. The town of Rome, Kentucky is a character in and of itself, and you'll swoon for the romance and this sweet small town setting. Stars Hollow vibes abound.

Ingredients

  • Graham Cracker Crust
  • 1 1/2 cups crushed graham crackers (about 10)

  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar

  • Pinch of salt

  • Chai Pumpkin Pie Filling
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tsp chai mix (see below)

  • Pinch of salt

  • Chai Spice Mix
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger

  • 1/2 tsp cardamom

  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves

  • 1/4 tsp allspice

  • 1/8 tsp black pepper

Directions

  • Make the Crust: Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Prepare a muffin tin with cooking spray.
  • In a bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs, brown sugar, melted butter, and salt until it resembles wet sand.
  • Press 1 ½ tablespoons of the mixture into each well of a standard muffin tin, using the back of a spoon or small cup to pack it firmly.
  • Bake for 5–6 minutes. Remove and let cool slightly while you make the filling.
  • For the Filling: In a medium bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, cream, egg, brown sugar, vanilla, chai spice, and salt until smooth.
  • Spoon the filling into the pre-baked crusts, filling each about ¾ full.
  • Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until the centers are just set and don’t jiggle when moved. Let cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with some of the remaining chai spice and serve with your favorite romance novel! I particularly enjoy these chilled.

Notes

  • These would be delicious with a bit of whipped cream on top.
