A Modern Spring Dinner Party Menu

A spring dinner party comes together effortlessly with a menu that feels modern and fresh. Silky and vibrant green pasta with spinach and goat cheese, a shareable asparagus flatbread, and an herbal grapefruit cocktail create a gathering that’s both sophisticated and easy to enjoy.

As the days stretch a little longer, I start thinking about setting a table outside. Dining under the stars is one of the wonderful gifts of living in California, and I try to take advantage of it whenever I can — especially in early spring, when there’s still a chill in the air and everything carries the faint scent of lavender and lilac.

When I host this time of year, I lean into freshness. The farmers market is overflowing with tender herbs and impossibly green produce, and it’s the color more than anything that begins to shape the menu. We eat with our eyes first, after all.

Pasta is always a generous place to begin when cooking for friends. For this dinner, I wanted something vibrant and green, but not predictable. While pesto will forever have its place (and my Citrus Pistachio Pesto would be a lovely choice), this Silky Spring Green Pasta feels more at home here — spinach and parsley blended with cream cheese and goat cheese for a sauce that’s creamy without heaviness. The result is bright, almost luminous, and beautifully suited to the season.

To begin, asparagus, sliced thin and layered over flatbread with fontina and thyme-infused olive oil. It’s simple, but the presentation feels fresh. The edges crisp, the cheese soft, the asparagus just tender.

The cocktail follows the same philosophy: a classic greyhound, sharpened with rosemary simple syrup. Familiar, but slightly reframed.

This menu celebrates spring in both flavor and color, but without extravagance. It’s relaxed. Welcoming. A little sophisticated without trying too hard.

Just the kind of dinner meant to be lingered over — ideally outside, beneath a sky that stays light a little longer than it did the week before.

The Menu at a Glance

This menu is beautiful, elegant, and chic for Spring. I’m serving:

Rosemary Greyhound

Start the evening with something bright and herbal.

Fresh grapefruit juice and vodka keep it crisp, while a rosemary simple syrup adds just enough savory depth to make it feel special. It’s refreshing without being sweet, and it sets the tone for everything that follows — modern, seasonal, and just slightly unexpected.

Serve it over plenty of ice with a sprig of rosemary or a thin slice of grapefruit.

Asparagus, Fontina, and Thyme Flatbread

This flatbread is warm and gently savory. It’s the kind of starter that invites people to gather in the kitchen while you finish dinner.

Pizza dough is brushed with garlic-thyme olive oil, layered with grated fontina, and topped with thin asparagus. In the oven, the cheese melts into something silky while the asparagus softens but keeps its bright color. A final drizzle of infused olive oil and a sprinkle of flaky salt bring everything together.

Slice it into small pieces and serve it warm. It’s simple, but it feels intentional.

Silky Spring Green Pasta with Pistachio and Lemon

The pasta is the heart of the evening.

Coated in a vibrant green sauce and finished with lemon and toasted pistachios, it’s fresh but comforting — light enough for spring, substantial enough to feel like dinner. The texture is what makes it special: silky sauce, tender pasta, and a little crunch from the nuts.

Serve it family-style in a large bowl. Let it be the centerpiece.

How to Make it Feel Effortless

What makes this a modern spring dinner party isn’t just the menu, it’s the mood.

Set the table simply. Linen napkins. A bowl of lemons and grapefruit or a few clipped herbs in a small vase. Nothing overly styled. Let the vibrant green food do the work.

You can make the rosemary syrup earlier in the day. You could even make a batch of the greyhounds in a pitcher that are ready to go when your guests arrive. The flatbread comes together quickly and simply. The pasta sauce can be prepped ahead and blended just before cooking. That way, when guests arrive, you’re assembling — not scrambling.

Kitchen Tools You’ll Need

The dishes I’m serving here are simple and elegant and only require a few special items in the kitchen. For the pasta, you’ll need either a blender or a food processor to get that creamy sauce. I love to serve this piled in a low serving bowl for maximum wow with that beautiful green color. A microplane will also help you get lovely lemon zest and parmesan grated on top of the dish. For the flatbread, a pizza cutter and a large serving tray will keep this one shareable at the table. And for the rosemary greyhounds, just a cocktail shaker and some beautiful glasses will keep the drinks coming all night.
